Agenda Introduce Volusia County Mosquito Control (VCMC). Briefly discuss VCMC’s historical background. Provide an overview of our Integrated Pest Management Program (IPM). Address current events, issues and trends.

The East Volusia Anti-Mosquito District formed in a local “Lions” club and passed by the State Legislature on June 11, 1937. Intent is to contend with massive influxes of salt marsh produced mosquitoes. The entire 500+ square mile district was covered with a five (5) man crew.

WPA workers dig miles of ditches by hand. 1940’s/1950’s: draglines and dynamite used. District purchased its first aircraft in 1949.

Early 1960’s: still using fixed wing aircraft for surveillance and treatment. DDT phased out in the mid 1960’s.

Surveillance driven as mandated by Florida State Law: Chapter 388, F.S. and FL Administrative Code 5E-13. Source Reduction – from “Tip and/or Toss” to salt marsh work with equipment. Biological control – fish propagation and “seeding”. Larviciding and Adulticiding. Community Outreach and Public Education.
