2
LANDING SAFELY JOHN HORNE
3
BACKGROUND Recent increase in injuries/deaths under perfectly serviceable canopies Not peculiar to UK, worldwide problem BPA Panel of Enquiry is investigating reduction of risk We need feedback from you the membership
4
QUESTION? Why do you think jumpers are turning close to the ground….. injuring or killing themselves?
5
FACTORS Parachuting is hazardous Small, highly loaded canopies increase that risk Not all incidents are caused by misjudged hook-turns A must get into wind mentality contributes to the risk (landing priorities?)
6
FACTORS A determination to “look cool” in front of spectators For every incident there are dozens maybe hundreds of “narrow escapes” Who here has had formal instruction on canopy handling since initial ground training?
7
EQUIPMENT Ensure you are familiar with your kit, especially club kit Deployment systems
8
STATIC-LINE
9
RIPCORD
10

17
EQUIPMENT Correctly fitted and adjusted G-Forces? Size – manufacturer’s recommendations? Wingloading? Aspect Ratio? Elliptical?
18
PRE-JUMP DZ aerial photo? under/overshoots? Local rules/hazards? Landing pattern? Other groups? Wind/temperature? Rollover? Turbulence? Altitude of DZ?
19
PLAN Plan your approach, but do not be inflexible Be prepared to change your approach/pattern if circumstances dictate it Better to walk back from a long spot, than to be carried back..!!
20
PULL TIME Remember pull priorities ? A good track is horizontal not down, get separation, lots of it
21
Tracking
22
PULL TIME Remember pull priorities? A good track is horizontal not down, get separation, lots of it Be aware of others Good wave off Positive pull and…..Check Canopy?
23
PULL TIME Learn to use back risers on opening to avoid collisions Nuisance factors? Systems check? Airspace and altitude? LOCATE DROP ZONE
24
LOCATE DZ Will you get back? How do you know?
25
NO CHANCE
26
WHY….?
27
‘COS THIS IS THE DZ
28
MAYBE….?
29
GETTING BACK A little brake may help Rear riser may be better Use crab method if you are off the wind line Keep checking for other safe landing areas
30
DEFINITELY
31
EXERCISES In a safe area Check airspace first Don’t drift away from PLA Stop in plenty of time to get back Not all on same jump
32
EXERCISES Slow flying, elevation turns and practice flares Steer using back risers Steer using front risers Harness turns Remember canopy does not spiral on the spot
33
SETUP Leave holding area Look before you turn Set up in plenty of time Vertical separation important Landing Pattern? Beware of “Tunnel Vision” on approach
34
SETUP
35
HAZARDS Avoid by steering away, at a high altitude. Don’t look at hazards
36
LANDING Bracket landing area with toggles (accuracy trick) Too hot - S Turns? Remember: LANDING PRIORITIES
37
LANDING Flare smoothly, from full drive Same both sides At right height Beware sideways movement Once down, look out for other jumpers landing
38
LANDING
39
LAND SAFELY ABOVE ALL
