Consequences Incentives Consequences Ignore 3 general types of consequences :

CONSEQUENCES: STRENGTHEN OR WEAKEN BEHAVIORS Strengthen if a positive consequence: Praise, stickers, smiles, free time Weaken if not positive: ignore, harsh words, extra work assigned, loss of privileges ESTABLISHIHG ROUTINES FOR USE OF CONSEQUENCES IS IMPORTANT
7
Most Important Thing Use positive consequences instead of negative ones if at all possible: – Catch students doing the right thing and point it out – Ignore minor infractions if not disruptive – 10 to 1 rule – Chart 6.5, p. 229—how does this teacher use oral incentives?

When you MUST use negative consequences... Do the most mild thing first—praise rather than “things”; reminders rather than harsher punishment https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/ge tting-students-back-on-track?fd=1 https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/ge tting-students-back-on-track?fd=1 Explain and discuss the problem rather than punish Chart 6.5, p. 229—how does this teacher use oral incentives?

Low-Profile Classroom Management Avoids Teaching Disruptions: Anticipates problems (scans, changes pace or activity, change voice pitch, etc.) Deflects problems with minor and mild actions (teacher proximity, eye contact, facial expression, peer recognition) Uses well-established routines and mild consequences to react to problems if they occur (warnings, cues, loss of privilege etc.) 6.6 p. 230
