2 PLANNING A TRAMP Know your party: experience, fitness, problems and state of health Route: look at maps, talk to others. Select suitable routes. Check for alternatives to river crossings. Select campsites / huts and pay in advance (hut tickets from DOC / information centres / Dwights / private owners. Organise equipment: individual and group. Safety equipment? Organise food: check groups have planned carefully Arrange transport to and from tramp Make sure someone knows who is with you and your plans Check weather forecast: long range and immediate Inform DOC of your intended movements, check conditions

3 PLANNING – AFTER THE TRIP Notify contacts that all is well and thank them Clean and dry equipment Discuss whether food and equipment were adequate and suitable Was the rote suitable? Were expectations met?

4 PLANNING – THINGS TO CONSIDER Who is going? What is the purpose of the activity? Where are you going? What is the level of difficulty? How long will it take?

5 PLANNING – GROUP DYNAMICS Do all party members relate well to each other? Plan a leadership structure - take into account the skills and experience of group members

6 PLANNING – EQUIPMENT What equipment is needed? What will be shared? How will it be shared? Make sure no-one is carrying unnecessary equipment - may weaken the person concerned - may have to be carried by others if person is injured What safety equipment do you need (mountain radio/emergency beacon)

7 PLANNING – CLOTHING Will everyone take their own emergency spare clothes? Or will this be shared? Will you check each other’s gear or rely on self-management?

8 PLANNING – FOOD Is food individual / shared by small group / shared by entire group? Who carries what? Is everyone catered for? Remember - allergies - vegetarians - diabetics - coeliacs (gluten-free)

9 PLANNING – COMMUNICATION If something goes wrong, what means of communication do you have? - remember cell phones may have no signal - cell phone/ radio batteries may go flat How remote is the area you are travelling in?

10 PLANNING – TRIP PLANNING FORMS Should always be completed - as a guideline for planning - to make sure everyone knows the plan - to leave with the contact person For future planning, it is helpful to have a column with the actual times
