Hybrid Benefits Regenerative Braking 1.When stopping the vehicle, Allison Electric Drive automatically becomes an energy generator by converting vehicle energy into electrical energy. 2.The electrical energy is then saved, by storing it in the Allison Energy Storage System for future use. 3.When accelerating the vehicle, the stored electrical energy is used to accelerate the vehicle, saving fuel and reducing harmful emissions and noise, while improving comfort. Thomas Built Buses has developed and begun evaluating a prototype of a hybrid Saf-T-Liner C2 school bus. The prototype is powered by a Mercedes-Benz diesel engine, an Eaton Corp. transmission and an electric motor. It was developed jointly by Thomas Built, Eaton and Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. IC Corporation, North America’s largest school bus manufacturer, unveiled the nation’s first hybrid school bus today at the New York Association of Pupil Transportation (NYAPT) Show. unveiled The company, a subsidiary of Navistar International Corporation, has partnered with Enova Systems to develop the hybrid, which can deliver about a 40% increase in fuel economy.. The initial powertrain for the hybrid school bus will couple an International VT365 V8 diesel engine with a post-transmission 80 kW Hybrid Drive System, incorporating a transmission, batteries and an electric motor. The system is based on a parallel architecture. The company will offer two battery systems—NiMH and PbA—as well as a plug-in configuration that uses an NiMH battery pack. (More information to come.)

The Post Transmission Parallel Hybrid System locates the electric motor between the transmission and rear axle. Both the electric motor and the existing vehicles engine operate simultaneously to drive the wheels during acceleration. As the vehicle slows, during braking, the electric motor functions as a generator to recharge the batteries. The Hybrid subsystems are designed to be installed as a "drop in," fully integrated turnkey fashion into an OEM production line, or retrofitted into an existing vehicle. The system requires little to no modifications to chassis, body, Instrument Panel, etc. The system does not intrude on, or require any alteration to the Engine Control/Communication system, thus avoiding any emissions certification issues. Additionally the Hybrid system does not need to be operational in order for the vehicle to be driven. If, for any reason, the Hybrid system is not working, the vehicle will operate without limitation. Post Transmission Parallel Hybrid

Volvo Group presents hybrid technology in the US The Volvo Group is a leader in hybrid drives for heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses and in March 2006 presented a unique hybrid solution that has great potential of becoming commercially viable. Volvo's solution was named based on its functionality, I- SAM - Integrated Starter Alternator Motor, and can provide fuel savings of up to 35% depending on application area and driving conditions. The first vehicles are expected to enter production in 2009. The Group is also developing hybrid technology for construction equipment, such as wheel loaders, in which the fuel savings can be up to 50%. "The issue of climate changes and uncertainty regarding the supply and pricing of oil makes hybrid drive an extremely attractive technology for our customers," says Volvo CEO Leif Johansson. "With our solution, we can offer technology that saves fuel and the environment and, consequently, can be good business for society and our customers." January 11, 2007 The Volvo FM Hybrid Concept
