2 Introduction What sort of items do people put in a safe? (money, jewelry, important papers, etc.) Why do they put these things in a safe? (to keep them from being stolen, to keep them from burning up in a fire, to keep them from being lost) A safe protects and keeps secure whatever valuables are in it.

3 Why does God forbid us to have any other gods?
Aim Each of God's Ten Commandments is like a safe. It protects something that is very important. Today we ask ourselves: Why does God forbid us to have any other gods? Why does God forbid us to have any other gods?

4 The First Commandment Love for God

5 What does God require of us?
Daniel 6:10 Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.

Daniel 3:18 …we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.

7 What does God require of us?
That we fear him above all things Put him first, honor what he says.

Isaiah 45:21 …there is no God apart from me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none but me.

9 Why? He is the only true God.

10 What does God require of us?
Psalm 100:3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

11 Why? He is the only true God. We belong to Him.

12 What does God require of us?
Proverbs 8:13 To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.

13 Why? He is the only true God. We belong to Him.
We hate what he hates and love what he loves.

14 What does God require of us?
Genesis 22:11-12 But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son."

15 What does God require of us?
That we fear him above all things. That we love him above all things More than anything else!

16 What does God require of us?
Psalm 73:25-26 Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

17 Why? He is our greatest treasure.

18 What does God require of us?
2 Corinthians 5:14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.

19 Why? He is our greatest treasure. He loved us first and best.

20 What does God require of us?
Matthew 22:37 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

21 Why? He is our greatest treasure. He loved us first and best.
So we love him in the same way!

22 What does God require of us?
1 Samuel 17: The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine… 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.

23 What does God require of us?
That we fear him above all things. That we love him above all things. That we trust in him above all things. Know that he will always take care of us.

24 What does God require of us?
Psalm 37:5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this.

25 Why? He always keeps his word.

26 What does God require of us?
Psalm 124:8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.

27 Why? He always keeps his word. He will always be there to help us.

28 What does God want us to avoid?
He wants us to avoid fearing, loving or trusting anyone or anything besides God himself.

29 What does God want us to avoid?
Proverbs 1:10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.

30 What does God want us to avoid?
Like "fearing"-- Friends Stars Superstitions more than Him

31 What does God want us to avoid?
1 John 2:15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

32 What does God want us to avoid?
Like "loving"-- Parents Friends Yourself Money Popularity Games more than Him

33 What does God want us to avoid?
Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.

34 What does God want us to avoid?
Like "trusting"-- Ourselves Superstition False gods Luck Other people more than Him

35 What do we want to do now? Psalm 143:2 Do not bring your servant into judgment, for no one living is righteous before you.

36 What do we want to do now? Confess that we haven't kept God's command perfectly.

37 What do we want to do now? Romans 5:19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

38 What do we want to do now? Confess that we haven't kept God's command perfectly. Trust in Jesus who kept it perfectly for us.

39 What do we want to do now? Psalm 119:9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word.

40 What do we want to do now? Confess that we haven't kept God's command perfectly. Trust in Jesus who kept it perfectly for us. With God's help obey it in the future.
