The following tutorial is designed to help you with locations of physical features and countries in Southwest Asia based on 7th grade social studies Georgia Performance Standards

SS7G1 The student will locate selected features of Africa. a. Locate on a world and regional political-physical map: the Sahara, Sahel, savanna, tropical rain forest, Congo River, Niger River, Nile River, Lake Tanganyika, Lake Victoria, Atlas Mountains, and Kalahari Desert. b. Locate on a world and regional political-physical map the countries of, Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire), Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Sudan.

17 Sahara Desert BACK Click map to see points of interest in the Sahara Click Picture to see how people live in the Sahara The Sahara Desert, covering most of North Africa, is the largest desert in the world. From north to south the Sahara is between 800 and 1,200 miles and is at least 3,000 miles from east to west.

18 Sahel BACK Explore the Sahel Located at the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, the Sahel is an arid region made up of grassland and savanna.

19 Savanna BACK CLICK CLICK PIC What is a savanna? A large part of Africa is made up of savannas. Savannas are areas in tropical or subtropical regions covered with grasses and scattered trees. Africa has savannas in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

20 Tropical Rain Forest BACK What is a rain forest? Check this out! To the south of the Sahel, much of western Africa near the Equator is covered by rain forests.

21 Atlas Mountains Click Here BACK The Atlas Mountains are a mountain range in northwest Africa in the countries of Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria.

22 Kalahari Desert BACK Click in the Desert The Kalahari Desert is located in southwest Africa in the countries of Botswana, South Africa, and Namibia.

23 Lake Victoria BACK Where does Lake Victoria rank in size in comparison to the world’s lakes? Click and find out. Click the Pic Located in eastern Africa, Lake Victoria is the largest lake on the continent and the source of the Nile River. Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya all border this lake.

24 Lake Tanganyika BACK Click the Lake Lake Tanganyika is the longest freshwater lake in the world. It is located between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania in eastern Africa. Burundi and Zambia also border this lake.

25 Nile River BACK Click the yellow box Take a Tour The Nile River, at almost 4,000 miles, is the longest river in the world. It flows north from Lake Victoria through Uganda, Sudan, and Egypt into the Mediterranean Sea.

26 Congo River BACK Click It The Congo River is the second longest river in Africa. Its source is in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and it forms part of the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Congo. It flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

27 Niger River BACK Click the map The Niger River from space The Niger River flows through the western part of Africa. Its source is in Guinea, and it flows through Mali, Niger, and Nigeria before emptying into the Gulf of Guinea, which is part of the Atlantic Ocean.
