What causes the disease? Gray mold infects plants that are already broken or beginning to die. Moisture is another cause. The wetter the plants the more likely to be infected they become.

Signs and Symptoms: In wet or humid weather you want to look for any brown or spotted plant material that develops. There may be a dusting that appears to come off there spots. Spots may also appear to be water soaked.

How is the disease controlled? Prune or stake plants to improve air circulation. Add organic compost or mulch under plants. Keep soil under the plants clean. Rake Fallen debris. Water in early morning or use soaker hose to allow time to dry.

What type of plants does it affect? Flowers with thick succulent petals, such as begonias, peonies, and geraniums are often affected. Many fruits, Veggies, And berries are also very easily infected, especially after being harvested and moved into cool storage areas. Fruits commonly infected are apples, pears, peaches, plums, raspberries, strawberries, black berries and grapes. Veggies commonly infected are tomatoes and beans.

Is there anything a person can do to prevent this disease? Sanitation: Remove fallen petals, or infected plants asap. Keep leaves dry: Avoid over watering. Provide good air circulation: Do not over crowd your plants. Chemical controls: Fungicides can be applied on a protective basis before disease develops. Maintain heathy plants.
