2.  Individuals who served on active duty after 09/10/01 may be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill if the individual:  Served for an aggregate period of at least 90 days.  Note: Exceptions are made for individuals discharged due to a service connected disability and serving at least 30 continuous days on active duty after 9/10/01.  Note: Individuals did not have to make contributions towards Chapter 30 or VEAP to become Chapter 33 eligible.

3.  Private and Foreign Schools: The lesser of the actual net cost for tuition and fees after the application of any waiver, scholarship, aid, or assistance [other than loans and funds provided under section 401(b) of the Higher Education Act of 1965], or $18,077.50 for the academic year beginning on August 1, 2012.

4.  As of August 1, 2011, eligibility to interval pay is restricted to periods where as a school is closed due to an Executive Order of the President or due to an emergency situation. These payments are limited to 4 weeks in any 12 month period.  This applies to all VA education benefit programs.

5.  On October 1, 2011, VA will begin paying benefits to members of the Army National Guard and Air National Guard for qualifying service under Title 32. The following service may qualify:  Full time service in the National Guard for the purpose of organizing, administering, recruiting, instructing or training activations in support of a national emergency under section 502(f) of Title 32 National Guard Service.

6.  Individuals only taking distance courses: Distance learning courses at more than one-half time will be eligible for a Monthly Housing Allowance equal to 50% of the national average of all Basic Allowance for housing rates will be multiplied by the rate of pursuit rounded to the nearest multiple of 10. ONLINE ONLY BAH = $684.00  NOTE: Basic eligibility requirements for Monthly Housing Allowance benefits (e.g. veterans with a rate of pursuit >.50) remain unchanged.

7.  The MGIB program provides up to 36 months of education benefits. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances. Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following your release from active duty. This program is also commonly known as Chapter 30.

8.  Each year in October, the Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) payment rates increase to meet the growing cost of education. This October the MGIB full-time student payment rate will increase to $1,564 a month for the 2013 fiscal year (2012-2013 School Year) for full-time attendance; for those that completed an enlistment of 3 years or more.  Eligible Veterans and Soldier's can receive as much as $56,304 in cash benefits over 36 months. This new monthly payment rate applies to all MGIB users.

9.  Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP)  VEAP is available if you elected to make contributions from your military pay to participate in this education benefit program. Your contributions are matched on a $2 for $1 basis by the Government. You may use these benefits for degree, certificate, correspondence, apprenticeship/on-the-job training programs, and vocational flight training programs. In certain circumstances, remedial, deficiency, and refresher training may also be available.  Benefit entitlement is 1 to 36 months depending on the number of monthly contributions. You have 10 years from your release from active duty to use VEAP benefits. If there is entitlement not used after the 10-year period, your portion remaining in the fund will be automatically refunded.

10.  Dependents' Educational Assistance provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of certain veterans. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits. These benefits may be used for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeship, and on-the-job training. If you are a spouse, you may take a correspondence course. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances. Eligibility:  You must be the son, daughter, or spouse of:  A veteran who died or is permanently and totally disabled as the result of a service- connected disability. The disability must arise out of active service in the Armed Forces.  A veteran who died from any cause while such permanent and total service-connected disability was in existence.  A service member missing in action or captured in line of duty by a hostile force.  A service member forcibly detained or interned in line of duty by a foreign government or power.  A service member who is hospitalized or receiving outpatient treatment for a service connected permanent and total disability and is likely to be discharged for that disability. This change is effective December 23, 2006.

11.  TA Student is Active Duty Military and can include some civilians working on military bases.  MUST HAVE TUITION ASSISTANCE AUTHORIZATION FORM.  VA Student is a veteran who is using some form of benefit under the various programs.  SNHU REQUIRES A CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY.

12.  TA Undergraduate student:  TA covers cost of course ($675.00) for Active Duty Student with authorized form.  Can be registered only upon confirmation and/or receipt of Authorized Tuition Assistance form.  TA Graduate student:  TA pays $750.00 per course leaving a balance.  Must pay the balance prior to registration-out of pocket, VA benefits or financial.

13.  GoArmyEd: There is no form generated for TA  Student must be approved for tuition assistance and go to www.goarmyed.com to register. Benefit is $4,500.00.www.goarmyed.com  Transfer student must change his home school location to SNHU.  Once TA is exhausted undergraduate students can use VA benefits.  Immediate notification of GoArmyEd student necessary to process benefit.

14.  Student is approved for tuition assistance;  Air Force Education Office provides tuition assistance form for student.  Student e-mails the form to military financial services at: militarybenefits@snhu.edu.militarybenefits@snhu.edu  TA invoice is processed directly to the Air Force using the AIportal after the add/drop period is over.  TA for undergraduate Air Force students is $675.00.

15.  Student is approved by base education office;  Numbered Tuition Assistance Authorization Form is issued to student.  Numbered forms are prepared for upload to WAWF portal.  Authorized form is the only way to get the TA identification numbers to process tuition assistance!  After the add/drop period is over, spreadsheets are uploaded to WAWF.

16. Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard  Can take up to 3-4 weeks after the term start before funding is received and credited to student accounts.  GoArmyEd- can take 4-6 weeks for payment processing depending on the start date of the term. 18% of the course must be complete before the invoice will appear AND we can only bill once between the 15 th & 30 th of the month.

17.  Post 9/11- Chapter 33 Students eligible at 100%.  Chapter 31 Voc-Rehab Students  No other veteran population can be registered without some form of payment.

18.  Post 9/11 Chapter 33 eligible at less than 100% must pay the difference between the eligibility amount and the cost of tuition.  Chapters 30, 35, 1606, etc.  All students eligible under other programs receive the benefit directly and require upfront payment for the course.

19.  Yellow Ribbon is part of Post 9/11- only available to those who are 100% eligible for benefits.  Picks up tuition costs after the $18,077.50 per year tuition cap is met.  An Undergraduate COCE student would need to take 18 courses at the normal tuition rate.  A Graduate COCE Student would need to take more than 10 classes in a year.

20.  Housing allowance (BAH) is paid directly to the student based on Full-Time enrollment  Full-Time enrollment is 2 courses every term for Undergraduate and Graduate students.  One course must be on campus for the student to receive Full-BAH.  Online only students receive ½ the national average of BAH – $684.00.  Book Stipends go directly to the student and they must upfront the cost of the books and reimburse themselves.

21.  Rep. Jeff Miller’s (R-FL) Restoring GI Bill Fairness Act of 2011 has been approved by the Senate just as the next wave of GI Bill changes asso­ci­ated with The Post-9/11 Veterans Education Assistance Improvement Act are about to go into effect.Restoring GI Bill Fairness Act of 2011The Post-9/11 Veterans Education Assistance Improvement Act  Signed by the President grandfathered students who were presently enrolled. The student must stay at the institution where the benefit initiated.

22.  To qualify, a Veteran must:   Be at least 35 and no more than 60   Be unemployed   Have an other than dishonorable discharge   Not be eligible for any other VA education benefit program (e.g., the Post-9/11 GIBill, Montgomery GI Bill, Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Assistance)   Not be in receipt of VA compensation due to un-employability   Not be enrolled in a federal or state job training program

23.  What can the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program be used for?  Participants must enroll in a program approved for VA benefits offered by a Community College or Technical School.  The program must lead to an Associate Degree, Non-College Degree, or a Certificate and train the Veteran in a high demand occupation.

24. Can a Veteran pursue an Associate’s degree or certificate program at a 4-year school using VRAP?  No. VRAP only provides assistance for approved training offered at community colleges and technical schools. How much does the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program pay?  A Veteran may receive up to 12 months of assistance equal to the monthly full time payment rate under the Montgomery GI Bill–Active Duty program.

25.  All Students get a bill. It does not matter their method of payment.  Bills and payments do not always coincide. Remember: Benefit changes to Chapter 33 are irrevocable.
