Notes les 28-29 mars Le comparatif des adjectifs (Comparisons) In order to compare people and things using adjectives, you use the following expressions: plus…que = more… than moins…que = less… than aussi … que = as…as

La géographie est plus intéressante que l’histoire. ( Geography is more interesting than history.) Les sandales sont moins chères que les baskets. ( The sandals are less expensive than the tennis shoes.) Will Ferrell est aussi amusant que Jim Carrey. ( Will Ferrell is as funny as Jim Carrey.)

The adjective used must agree in gender and number with the person or thing that appears first in the comparative sentence. Les hommes sont aussi i ntelligents que les femmes. ( Men are as intelligent as women.) Les femmes sont aussi intelligentes que les hommes. ( Women are as intelligent as men.)

When comparing people, we can use stress pronouns. The stress pronouns are: moi ( me ) nous ( us ) toi ( you ) vous ( you, you guys ) lui ( him ) eux ( them (at least one male)) elle ( her ) elles ( them (all female)) Je suis plus patient que toi. ( I’m more patient than you.) Nous sommes aussi sportifs qu’ eux. ( We’re as athletic as them.)
