1 The Louisiana Purchase June 20, 1803 Mr. Cherry Ms. Kwayzer /Ms. Lubing 7th-Grade Social Studies

2 Description The United States has just purchased the Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million. This huge new addition stretches north from the Mississippi to the Rocky Mountains and doubles the size of the United States. President Thomas Jefferson has decided to send an expedition to map this region, meet with the numerous Indian tribes living there, examine the animals and plants, and find a route to the Pacific Ocean. You have been chosen to lead this expedition, called Corps of Discovery, and will need to do the following:doublesPresident Thomas Jefferson

3 Task Develop a plan for exploring Louisiana starting in St. Louis and ending at the Pacific Ocean. Map a proposed route. Give a reason for choosing the route. List the equipment you will need to bring with (Remember, it is the 1800’s). Think of items from the following categories:

4 Task Continued Clothes Food Medicine Science Equipment Gifts for Indians Guns Whiskey Etc.

5 Task Continued Identify your winter headquarters. State the date of your departure and the date of your estimated arrival. List the number of people needed for your expedition. Consider some possible problems you might face.

6 Rubric Make sure you have the following parts included in your project:  Map: 30 points Includes your start point, end point, route, winter headquarters, Rocky Mountains, Mississippi River, Missouri River, United States, Pacific Ocean, Spanish Territory (Mexican Cession), Oregon Territory, Gadsden Purchase, Louisiana Territory, compass rose, and a key.

7 Checklist Continued  Written Part: 35 points 1. Reason why you chose that route 2. List of equipment/supplies needed 3. Date of departure and estimated arrival 4. Number of people needed for your expedition: (Be specific…3 cooks, 2 builders, etc.) 5. Possible problems you might face 6. Winter headquarters: (Where are you stopping and why?)
