PROMPT ¿Qué efecto tienen los desastres naturales en tu comunidad? ¿Cómo responde tu comunidad a las emergencias? Answer these questions through a cultural comparison. Specific, similar examples from US and your assigned country Recent or historically significant

WHAT YOU WILL DO Give a speech comparing and contrasting the events. Give details about what happened, and talk about the emergency response. Say what the events and responses had in common, and how they were different. Record your speech, and create a visual presentation with pictures.

SPEECH REQUIREMENTS Length: 1:30 – 2:30 (aim high) Recommended structure: Introduce your foreign country and your community, give some basic info about this type of disaster Tell about one disaster Tell about the other Compare and contrast them Conclude with a personal comment/opinion You must turn in a HAND WRITTEN hard copy of your speech

PRESENTATION REQUIREMENTS At least 10 press photos from the events (5 from each) Time the pictures to show as you are speaking I will provide website options

SOURCES No in-text citations 2 news articles minimum for each event (4 total) Must hand in a hard copy of the articles on due date I will provide news sources

GRAMMAR Tenses: Present, preterite, imperfect as appropriate

VOCABULARY Try to use words you already know Cite words you don’t (include sources) EX: Muchas personas necesitaban *cirugía Cirugía – surgery (Collins Spanish-English Dictionary) Try to use a textbook to find new words Too many new words will affect your grade

TIMELINE 10/21 & 10/22 – Research. 45 minutes of class time in the lab. 10/23 & 10/24 – Writing. At least 45 minutes of class time. 10/27-10/30 – Recording and creating presentations. 1 full day in the lab. 1 half day in the lab.

LATE PROJECTS Project is due before your class starts on due date. Handed in late on due date = -5% 1 day late = -10% 2 days late = -20% 3+ days late = -30% Project is late until ALL materials are submitted. 1 day late = you handed the project in the next school day
