1 Baseball as the American Pastime List some facts that you know about baseball. Why do you think that it is called the American pastime?

2 Baseball Ken Burns directed a documentary of the same name that traces the social and cultural history of the nation’s pastime. With 9 episodes it has been dubbed an American epic. As we delve into the role of baseball in film, we will reference this documentary.

3 Baseball – Why? Children’s game becomes national obsession. Reflects divided nature of democracy: individual achievement and sacrifice for the good of the team. Heroes reflect cultural ideals, what we aspire to be. Demonstrates American enterprise as well as ambition, exploitation, and greed.
