2 The objectives of 3-umpire mechanics Try to keep one umpire AHEAD of the lead runner If possible, “box” the runner between the three umpires

6 Umpire Positions Runner on 1 st & 2 nd

7 Umpire Positions Runner on 1 st & 3 rd

8 Umpire Positions Runner on 1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd

9 Anytime there is a RUNNER on 1 st U2 will be in “A” and U3 will be in “C”

10 Umpire Positions Runner on 2 nd

11 Umpire Positions Runner on 2 nd & 3 rd

12 Anytime there is a RUNNER on 2 nd, but NO RUNNER on 1st U2 will be in “B” and U3 will be in “D”

13 Umpire Positions Runner on 3 rd

14 Anytime there is a RUNNER on base OTHER THAN 1st U3 will be in “D”

15 CHECK SWINGS Go to the “Open” umpire –U2 for RIGHT handed batters –U3 for LEFT handed batters

16 Fly Ball Coverage U2 & U3 On the wings

18 Fly Ball Coverage U2 IN

19 INFIELD Catch / No Catch (per NFHS) P SS 3B 2B 1B

26 Positioning for calling plays at 1 st Base When there is a possible play at 1 st Base Clean base hit to outfield…… watch runner touch first, then rotate Home Pickoff Plays “SLIDE” Come in and make your pivot

27 Positioning for calling plays at 2 nd Base Runner advancing from 1 st base Runner returning to 2 nd base Pickoff Plays

28 Positioning for calling plays at 3 rd Base Runner advancing from 2 nd base Pickoff Plays Runner returning to 3 rd Base “SLIDE” or when working inside from C

29 U3 is the “KEY” for rotation when U2 and U3 are on the corners

30 Think of it like all umpires are connected by a “string”

40 Runner on 1 st Base Hit to Outfield

41 Runner on 1 st & 2 nd Double Steal (Throw to 3 rd )

42 Runner on 1 st & 2 nd Double Steal (Throw to 2nd)

43 Runner on 1 st & 2 nd Double Steal (two throws)

44 Runner on 1 st & 2 nd Trouble Ball – Left Field

45 Runner on 1 st & 2 nd Trouble Ball – Right Field

48 Bases Loaded Base hit to outfield

49 Bases Loaded Fly ball to right field

50 Runner 1 st and 3 rd Infield Hit

53 Runner on 2 nd Trouble Ball Left Field

62 The SLIDE Runners in scoring position and U1 is staying home

63 No Matter What Happens…..or Who misses a rotation FILL THE HOLE !!! We can talk about missed coverage later……….but SOMEONE has to MAKE THE CALL
