1 Plants

2 What do roots do for plants?
Types of Roots Fibrous Roots Taproot Roots that are smaller One large root that grows straight down They grow in many directions It has smaller roots that branch off of it Examples: grass, marigolds, most trees Examples: Carrots, radishes, turnips What do roots do for plants? Roots anchor the plants into the ground so they do not blow or wash away. Roots also take in water and minerals from the soil.

3 What do stems do for plants?
Types of Stems Green Stems Woody Stems Thin, green, and bend easily Brown, woody, and do not bend easily Produce their own food Grows thicker and taller each year Examples: tulips, lilies, petunias Examples: trees, shrubs What do stems do for plants? 1. Stems support the leaves, flowers, or cones. 2. Stems contain tubes that carry food, water, and minerals to all parts of the plant. 3. Some stems can store food for the plant.

4 Parts of a Leaf Blade Vein Stalk/Petiole
Where photosynthesis takes place Transports water and minerals throughout the leaf Supports the leaf on the stem of the plant. Vein Blade Stalk/Petiole

5 Vein Patterns Pinnate Palmate

6 Broad-Leaved Plants Simple Compound
A single blade attached to a stalk. One stalk with several blades attached to it.

7 Dormancy: The state of much lower activity
Why do trees enter a state of dormancy? There is less sunlight for photosynthesis To save energy

8 Transpiration: The giving off of water vapor by plants (excess water that leaves a plant)
