Today’s Focus Engage and orient the reader by establishing a context and point of view and introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally and logically.

What does “orient” mean? Engage and orient the reader by establishing a context and point of view and introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an even sequence that unfolds naturally and logically.

Orient To place (something) in a particular position or direction; to acquaint with the existing situation or environment

Activity: Orientation in “real” life You will walk blindly through the halls with only a partner to lead you. You will guess where your partner has you begin and where you finish.

Activity: Orientation in “real” life Partners must have physical contact with one another. If your partner runs into anything, you must come back to the classroom. No talking EXCEPT under the following circumstances: – Guiding partner can say “out of bounds” (see maps). – Blindfolded partner can say “clue” up to FIVE times. – Guiding partner can provide FIVE clues when asked. – Emergency “STOP” – Blindfolded partner must guess where he/she “starts” and where he/she “finishes.” You MUST be back to the classroom at the designated time.

How did your partner help “orient” you?
