Facts of Santiago Santiago is the capital of Chile It is the fifth largest city in South America It was founded on February 12, 1541 by Spanish Conquistador Pedro de Valdivia Chile won its independence from Spain on February 12, 1817 at the Battle of Chacabuco

Introductiono The purpose of this trip is to better acquaint ourselves with the Chilean culture, the Spanish language, and the city of Santiago. Santiago is a beautiful city with a unique culture and a great atmosphere. This would be the perfect destination for traveling abroad because its eclectic society will broaden our understanding of the Spanish language. Activities Funicular Skiing Museum A cable car (funicular) takes passengers up Saint Christopher’s Hill to a breathtaking view of the city. Halfway up the hill, passengers may stop and visit the Santiago Zoo, full of exotic animals. A day trip to Valle Nevado Ski Resort with great slopes for the whole family. This fun filled adventure allows you to breath in crisp mountain air and see local wildlife. The National Museum of History holds regular tours which educate people on the history and culture of Chile and its inhabitants. The museum only tells of Chile’s history up to 1973 because of political issues.

Chile is known for its fresh seafood and delectable meals. Classic Chilean meals include: Ensalada Chilena, Pastel de Choclo, Cola de Mona, Chancho en Piedra and many more. Originally, Chilean cuisine consisted mainly of Spanish dishes brought over by the Conquistadors. Eventually the Spanish dishes evolved with Chilean ingredients. Now, Chile has its own unique foods. How We Will Learn In our stay in Santiago, we will use our newly learned Spanish vocabulary by conversing with the locals, ordering off of Spanish menus, and finding our way around the city. Conclusion Our trip to Santiago would be a worth while visit to a very interesting city. We will learn multiple new vocabulary words and customs and continue our immersion into a foreign language. This unique opportunity will expand our horizons as bilingual students. The vocabulary we learned in Spanish II will allow us to communicate with the locals and learn from the great history of Santiago. This will be an amazing trip.
