2. The African Elephant’s description  Light brown to dark gray in skin color.  5-14 ft. tall and 6,000- 15,000 lbs.  Eats grasses, leaves, bamboo, bark, roots, bananas, and sugarcane.  Adults eat 300-400 lbs. of food per day!

3. The animal’s home  The African Elephant lives in the southwest part of Africa.  They live in 37 different countries south of the Sahara Desert.  Their habitat is either the in damp, cool forests or on the hot, dry savannah.

4. Why they’re endangered  Poachers hunt them for their ivory (their teeth and tusks).  Loggers are cutting down the forests.  The farmers are clearing the savannah.  The top picture shows its tusks. The bottom picture shows its teeth.

5. Their protection  You can not sell their ivory (teeth and tusks).  You can't hunt them.  If your caught doing either of them, you will go to prison.

6. Interesting facts  It is the largest land animal on Earth.  They are excellent swimmers.  Both the cow (female) and bull (male) have tusks.
