4 –Language Skills –1. Listening : Identify main ideas –2. Speaking : Use modelled phrases and sentences to communicate with teachers or other pupils –3. Reading : Recognise common abbreviations and contracted forms –4. Writing : Develop written texts by adding personal ideas and information when a model or framework is provided

5 Teaching Procedures : A. Motivation : Ask pupils to bring in some toy animals. Revise the names of the animals using the wall picture, flash cards or the toys. ( a panda, a tiger, a bird, a hippo, a monkey, an elephant) B. Revision : Revise the words tail, ears, nose, legs, beak, wings by pointing to the toys or pictures. Revise the adjectives big, small, long and short by talking about the body parts of different animals. Revise can by demonstrating that the teacher can run, swim and climb. Write on the blackboard I can run. I can’t swim. Etc. Then talk about the animals’ abilities e.g. A tiger can run. Demonstrate that the teacher cannot fly. Write on the blackboard I can’t fly. A bird can fly. Practise can and can’t using the toys or pictures.

6 C. Powerpoint Presentation : Set up ‘Powerpoint’ to ‘Animal Riddles’. For each Powerpoint, the sentences describing the animal will be appeared one by one. Encourage pupils to guess what the animal is. Pupil: Is it a/an __________? Teacher: Yes, it is. / No, it isn’t. The picture of the animal will be appeared at the end ie when all the sentences have already shown. Hence pupils know the answer. Pupils read aloud the animal riddle. Four Powerpoint will be shown in the same way so as to make pupils familiarize how to write an animal riddle.

7 D. Task (Writing animal riddles ) Ask pupils to write an animal riddle. They ask and answer in pairs using the structure Is it a _________? Yes, it is. / No, it isn’t. Remind pupils not to let their friends see the answer. E. Post-task Activity Pupils draw pictures of the toy animal they have brought to class or some pictures have been printed out in advance. On a separate piece of paper, they write a riddle about the animal. They put the picture on the notice board. The riddle they wrote is read out. If someone guesses the animal correctly, the riddle is pinned up under the picture.
