Life is Like a Cup of Coffee A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - Porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to the coffee. When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: "If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups have been taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups... And then you began eyeing each other's cups. Now consider this: Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of life we live." Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee. Savor the coffee, not the cups! The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything.

Personal SWOT
5
Strengths What advantages do you have that others don't have (for example, skills, certifications, education, or connections)? What do you do better than anyone else? What personal resources can you access? What do other people see as your strengths? Which of your achievements are you most proud of?
6
Weaknesses What tasks do you usually avoid because you don't feel confident doing them? What will the people around you see as your weaknesses? Are you completely confident in your education and skills training? If not, where are you the weakest? What are your negative work habits
7
Opportunities What new technology can help you? Or can you get help from others or from people via the Internet? Is your industry growing? If so, how can you take advantage of the current market? Do you have a network of strategic contacts to help you, or offer good advice? What trends (management or otherwise) do you see in your company, and how can you take advantage of them? Do your customers or vendors complain about something in your company? If so, could you create an opportunity by offering a solution?
8
Threats What obstacles do you currently face at work? Are any of your colleagues competing with you for projects or roles? Is your job (or the demand for the things you do) changing? Does changing technology threaten your position? Could any of your weaknesses lead to threats?
9
What is your opinion? “Life is a self-improvement course, and we are all in the same classroom” “When you can love the you that has made mistakes, that has failed over and over to measure up to the ideal, that has been broken again and again for the same stupid reasons, then you can love others who are dealing with the same struggle, because you know it is your struggle, too.” Chellie Campbell, “The Wealthy Spirit”
10
Have you come across these situations? Relationship Problems – When you lose the confidence of your team members; when you are acknowledged as – “never approachable”. Poor decision making capability – When you take a wrong decision as a result of which your performance gets affected. Rage in the Workplace – Outburst of emotions.
11
A few questions 1. Do you enjoy your work? 2. If you had only one word to describe yourself, what would it be? Why is that your word? 3. What do you do when you know someone has a problem with you? 4. What has been the highest pressure situation you’ve faced in recent years? How did you cope with it? 5. Tell me how you worked with someone you found to be difficult? 6. What do different team members need from you in your job? How do you do on those things? 7. What skills do you think the manager of the future will need? 8. Tell me how you handled a situation in which you had a major disagreement with someone?

Why EI Success today is closely linked to how people handle emotionally charged situations that they face daily. Emotional intelligent work environments have less turnover, adapt to change quicker and are more innovative. Emotional Intelligent organizations have less customer complaints and increased customer trust and loyalty.

To improve Emotional Intelligence… Listen more; speak less- develops empathy. Get curious, not furious- Watch what you say especially when frustrated or annoyed. Pay attention to self and other’s body language. Elicit pride in others – Reason for working together. Remember emotions are contagious - Leaders should be careful to show only those emotions, which they want to see in others.
18
Set your career goals Immediate Goals (six months to one year) Short-Term Goals (three years) Long-Term Goals (5-10 years) Start Date End Date ____________ ____________ What Actions Do I Take to Meet My Goals? What resources will I need? How can I overcome obstacles? _____________________
19
Example Lets take the e.g. of a nurse in a hospital. What is she doing, why is she doing and how does her work affect the world around her? 1) She takes care of the patients. 2) She does it for a living. Is that all? She does not get paid for that extra word of care or smile that she gives. Does she? There are nurses on night duty who are extremely vigilant whereas some of them sleep over and do not care. There are the ones who go the extra mile just for their patients, not for money. Whom would you respect? 3)She believes she is there to serve humanity and is accountable for whatever she does. ARE YOU?
20
The first step - Accountability Are your individual employee goals and objectives aligned with the vision and strategic goals of the entire organization? Remember if the organization grows you grow. You grow if you learn to be accountable.
