As European nations became industrialized they looked overseas from new markets and resources See map – between 1870 – 1914 the entire continent was under European rule Except Ethiopia and Liberia This scramble for Africa brought Europe to the brink of war

A conference in 1884 – 1885 in Berlin Germany set boundaries in Africa This was done without consulting the people of Africa

Africa was not well explored until the 1800’s Africa was full of disease and resistance – this prevented expansion Medical discoveries to cure diseases were discovered Yellow fever and malaria Europeans develop the maxim gun Makes movement easier 600 rounds per minute
