2 The WHO was founded in 1948 and since then has tried to wipe out major diseases in the world. In 1980, WHO managed to wipe out smallpox. In the late 1980s, the organisation began a campaign to wipe out diphtheria, measles, polio, tetanus, tuberculosis and whooping cough. Politics of Aid 11 WHO – World Health Organisation

3 The WHO faces continuing challenges. One of the most serious is AIDS. There are more people with AIDS in Africa than the rest of the world. It is likely that the WHO will spend even more money on the treatment of AIDS in the years to come. Politics of Aid 11 WHO and HIV/AIDS
