C HAPTER 18: E LECTRONIC S PECIAL E FFECTS

V OCABULARY : Chromakey: Type of key effect where a specific color can be blocked from the key camera’s input. Chrominance: Color portion of the video signal, which includes the hue and color saturation. Circle Wipe: Video effect where a circle grows or shrinks, replacing one picture with another. Clip Control: knob on the control panel of a SEG that allows the operator to adjust the amount of luminance that is sent to the SEG. Also called Key Level Control. Colorizer: Add-on feature to the internal key that allows the operator to fill the key cutout with any color, instead of simply white. Corner Insert: Video effect where a small image is positioned in any corner, usually the upper right or left corner, of the full screen image. All four sides of the smaller image rest inside the frame of the larger picture.

V OCABULARY (C ONTINUED ): Corner Wipe: Video effect where a small image is positioned in any corner, usually the upper right or left corner, of the full screen image. Two sides of the smaller image touch the actual frame of the larger picture. Digital Video Effect (DVE): Video effects that are created using digital technology and the ability to alter an image by manipulating each individual pixel. Edge Mode: Add-on feature to the internal key that places a border around the keyed image. External Key: Video effect that is a mixture of three images: the background image, the key source (shape of the cutout), and the key fill. The image or pattern that fills the key cutout shape is the key fill. Horizontal Wipe: Video effect where a vertical line moves across the screen horizontally, replacing one picture with another.

V OCABULARY (C ONTINUED ): Internal Key: Video effect that is a mixture of two images. One image provides the shape that is cut out of the other (background) picture. White fills the shape that is cut out. Also called a Luminance Key. Key: Video effect where the images or the output from two different sources are displayed on screen at the same time. Each image is displayed with 100% of its original intensity. Key Camera: Camera used to shoot the object providing the shape to be cut into the background picture when creating an internal key effect. Key Level Control: See Clip Control. Lower Third Key: Video effect created when an image or text is displayed in the lower third of the screen using a key effect. Lower Third Super: Video effect created when an image or text is displayed in the lower third of the screen using superimposition.

V OCABULARY (C ONTINUED ): Luminance: The brightness or lightness of the video picture. Luminance Key: See Internal Key. Matte Key: Add-on option to the internal key that allows the operator to fill the key cutout with any shade of gray, from light gray to black, instead of simply white. Pixel: One of the millions of little dots that make up the picture on a television screen, in a photograph or any other type of image display medium. Shadow Mode: Add-on feature to the internal key that places a drop shadow around two sides of the keyed image. Split Screen: Wipe that is stopped part of the way through its move, dividing the screen into two or more parts.

V OCABULARY (C ONTINUED ): Superimposition (Super): Video effect where the images or the output from two different sources are placed on screen at the same time. Each image is less than 100% of the original intensity, but when combined, the result is 100% of the intensity possible on the television screen. Transitional Device: Effect that is used as a means of getting from one scene to another. Vertical Wipe: Video effect where a vertical line moves across the screen vertically, replacing one picture with another.
