Strategies for Reading Nonfiction Set a purpose for reading Preview the reading material Understand the organization of the work Look for main ideas or topic sentences Separate fact from opinion Be aware of writer’s tone

Fact vs. Opinion Facts = statements that can be proven (Example: Ellen Goodman is the author of Primal Screen. Opinions = statements that express a writer’s belief and cannot be proven. (Example: Ellen Goodman is the world’s best columnist.)
