3. Understanding Parallel Structure
Parallel structure (also called parallelism) is the repetition of a chosen grammatical form within a sentence. By making each compared item or idea in your sentence follow the same grammatical pattern, you create a parallel construction.
We will focus on parallel structure in lists.
Examples:
Not Parallel:
Ellen likes hiking, the rodeo, and to take afternoon naps.
Parallel:
Ellen likes hiking, attending the rodeo, and taking afternoon naps.

4. Parallelism: A Visual
Long John Silver fights with a pistol, a sword, and a knife.
Long John Silver fights with article+noun, article+noun, and article+noun.
The student was forced to write his report quickly, accurately, and thoroughly.
The student was forced to write his report adverb, adverb, and adverb.

5. Parallelism Provides Grammatical Symmetry
Known as "The Golden Ratio", the face must be of particular proportions to be considered symmetrical.
More symmetrical = More beautiful

Good parallel structure improves the clarity of your writing.
Parallelism is used effectively as a rhetorical device throughout literature and in speeches, advertising copy, and popular songs.
Example:
"...and that government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth.“ –Lincoln
