5
Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS)
S-NPP operating well, spacecraft and instruments healthy, cal/val progressing well and on schedule JPSS-1 instruments are now in the environmental testing phase of development, bringing the satellite closer to its planned launch in early 2017 Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS), Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS), Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) and Clouds and Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) Launch Readiness Date FY 2017 (JPSS-1)*; FY 2021 (JPSS-2) Program Architecture 2 Satellites (JPSS-1 and JPSS-2) & 2 free-flyer satellites Program Operational Life FY 2016 – FY 2028 Program Life-cycle FY 2013 President’s Budget $12.9 billion *Launch Readiness Date based on FY 2014 President's Budget Request
6
NOAA Initiatives Maximize return on observing system investments
New office to examine requirements across NOAA Develop strategies to meet multiple requirements with a single investment Determine the most effective mix of investments in observation and data management systems Leverage domestic and international partnerships

NOAA “Value Tree” Single Period Analysis Chart description:
Top right section list all systems in the study, a checkmark indicates a given system is “turned on” Top left section lists details about the highlighted node, in this case the GOALS node (node score, roll up rule, node color) Levels of the value tree NOAA (at the top of the tree, not included on this chart) Goals (this top node for this chart, combines the Goals into one score. The other side of the tree which is not shown here contains the site information) Weather Ready Nation and Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Goals Goal Objectives (Reduce Loss of Life ……..) Mission Service Areas Data Sources and Tools The black triangles at the bottom of the DS&T boxes indicates the input to those nodes is mapped from the site side of the tree. NOSIA analysis determined NOAA’s current upper air observing performance is 76 on the scale (more precisely, 76.22). The PALMA tool allows the user to visually examine the effects on NOAA’s value tree of turning off individual or combinations of observing systems. Impacts can be explored through all levels of the value tree.
