2. Mae cath gyda fy. Mae = there is/ there are cath (f) = cat gyda = with fy = me Mae cath gyda fy. (There is a cat with me.) I have a cat. Mae dwy cath gyda fy. I have two cats. Dau (two) is ‘dwy’ here because the noun is feminine. Tri becomes tair before a feminine noun. Pedwar becomes pedair as well.

3. Mae cath ’da fy. Mae tair cath ’da fy. I have three cats. A couple of notices 1.‘Gyda’ is usually shortened to ‘’da’. 2.When you use a number to identify the amount of said noun, the noun stays singular after it.

4. Oes cath ’da ti? (Is there a cat with you?) Do you have a cat? Answers: Oes = yes (there is) Nacoes = no (there isn’t) Nacoes, does dim cath ’da fy. Oes bochdew ’da ti? Oes, mae bochdew ’da fy. Nacoes, does dim bochdew ’da fy.

5. Northern Welsh Learners… Unfortunately, there is a different rule for those hoping to learn Northern Welsh. They have a different way of saying possession and it can’t half be annoying. For those who want to learn both or for those who would prefer to learn Northern Welsh for whatever reason will be able to find a Northern Welsh version of this document on the website!
