1. L. P. Gas Changing Tanks

2. Introduction L.P. gases belong to a family of chemical compounds known as hydrocarbons. This means they are made up of hydrogen and carbon atoms only. Due to their chemical arrangement, L.P. gas is low in carbon monoxide emission; thus making it suitable for use as a fuel in industry. For example, many lift trucks are powered by L.P. gas.

3. Characteristics of L.P. Gas They are tasteless, colorless, and usually odorless. However, often an additive is added to the liquid to give it a detectible odor. When mixed with the proper amount of air, liquid petroleum gases will burn. Most L.P. gases are capable of being either a solid, liquid or gas under certain conditions.

4. Characteristics of L.P. Gas Cont… Most L.P. gases can be transported as liquids under pressure and can vaporize into gas for use. Under outdoor temperatures L.P. gas will expand rapidly into gas. L.P. gas will expand when heat is applied. L.P. gas can displace oxygen.

5. Empty L.P. Gas Tanks The three basic ways to tell if L.P. gas tanks need to be changed are: 1.Check the gauge on the tank. The gauge is connected to a float inside the tank. 2.Move the tank from side to side and gauge how much liquid is left. 3.Feel the outside of the tank, if the temperature is cold the level is low.

6. Changing Procedure Don appropriate PPE before beginning work. Ensure that you are 50 feet away from any ignition source. If the vehicle is not out of fuel, turn the ignition key to the off position. Always close the fuel valve when performing change-over.

7. Changing Procedure Cont… Uncouple the tank by loosening the coupling and remove the feed hose from the tank. Release the hold down clamps and raise the top part of the hold down bracket. Remove the tank from the bracket and place it in the empty rack.

8. Changing Procedure Cont… Place a full tank in the bracket of the lift truck. Ensure the relief valve has been placed in the upright position. Lower the top of the bracket and re-attach the hold down clamps. Re-attach the fuel supply line remembering the fitting is left hand threads and hand tighten. Open the valve and check for leaks.

9. Precautions Should the fuel supply hose break or rupture for any reason, the automatic shut-off valve will activate. If a leak is detected from any component on the tank,remove the tank from the lift truck, tag it out and report it to the supervisor. When not in use, shut off the fuel supply valve.
