SETTING

3. WHAT IS THE SETTING The setting is an element that author
uses to influence the reader’s imagination.
It tells us:
 what time of day it is
 where the story is located
 what the weather is like

4. Setting s use detail to bring the story alive.
These details are based on the 5 senses:
 …smell it
 …hear it
 …touch it
 …see it
 …taste it
These details is being use so that the readers can imagine the story.
Help to create certain atmosphere.

5. ELEMENTS OF SETTING Place - Geographical location.
Time - Historical period, time of day or year.
Weather condition -Weather of the day.
Social condition - Culture, what they do in
their daily life.
Mood or atmosphere - Feeling created at the
beginning of the story.

7. a) PLACE e.g: - Few Italians have the true virtuoso spirit.
The story is set in a nameless Italian city since the author keep mentioning the word ‘Italians’ in this story.
e.g: - Few Italians have the true virtuoso spirit.
- I was skilful in the Italian vintages myself, and bought largely whenever I could.
My friend, no. It is not the engagement, but the severe cold with which I perceive you are afflicted. The vaults are insufferably damp. They are encrusted with nitre.'

8. b) TIME
Unspecified years. Possibly during the 18th centuries because it was first published in November It is proven in the story that the author uses most of classic English words that are very unfamiliar in this new age English and it was used by a group of high-class society during that particular era.
e:g 'Come, let us go.'     'Whither?‘ – means ‘where to?’  'To your vaults.'      'My friend, no; I will not impose upon your good nature. I perceive you have an engagement. '

9. c) WEATHER
It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season, that I encountered my friend.
It was now midnight, and my task was drawing to a close.

10. d) SOCIAL
The social setting in the story was around an upper-class society of the rich Italians. It was well stated in the story since the author describes Montresso who owned servants and Fortunato who had honored with a knowledge of wine expertise.
e.g: Thus speaking, Fortunato possessed himself of my arm; and putting on a mask of black silk and drawing a roquelaire closely about my person, I suffered him to hurry me to my palazzo.

11. The word roquelaire refers to a long, heavy cloak which indicate that Fortunato is a man from the upper-class society

12. e) MOOD/ATMOSPHERE Revenge-
the author started his writing by putting the first narrator to convey the mood of holding a grudge against a man who had been insulting him with some unexplained injustice.
Horror –
the author’s uses of sentences in terms of time and place cause the readers to predict, to fear, and tremble in the unfolding action. The way the author convey the story produces an element of tension and foreboding to the story.

13. E.g:
The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge. You, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose, however, that I gave utterance to a threat. At length I would be avenged; this was a point definitely settled - but the very definitiveness with which it was resolved precluded the idea of risk.
