SCHIZOPHRENIA CHECKLIST 1.Must have at least 2 of the following 5 symptoms

1. DELUSIONS False belief Not to be confused with a real belief that is simply overvalued (superiority of one’s race, etc.) Cannot be persuaded that delusion is incorrect

DELUSION EXAMPLES Examples include but are not limited to Erotic Grandeur Guilt Jealousy Persecution Delusion NOT delusion Delusion NOT delusion

2. HALLUCINATIONS ONLY if fully awake/aware not to be confused with illusions which are misinterpretations of something actually there NOT drug induced or physically ill; must be otherwise healthy physically

3. DISORGANIZED SPEECH Interferes with proper communication marked loosening of proper associations Rhymes EXAMPLE Puns EXAMPLE Illogical speech “the bus is in the refrigerator”

5. “NEGATIVE SYMPTOMS” Negative something taken away: Motivation Speech Emotion

4. CATATONIA Immobility for long periods Possibly in positions that would seem extremely uncomfortable for us. Much rarer today. Also may be the result of other types of mental illness that overlap with Schizophrenia.

IS THERE HOPE? Not curable; only treatable Affects significantly more men than women Combination of Medication & Therapy work best; much better than either by itself

MEDICATION Antipsychotic medication is the only proven way to help the psychotic symptoms ? Antidepressant Antianxiety

RELAPSE Many Schizophrenia patients abandon their medications Dislike of side effects “I feel fine” Family support (including therapy for family members) can significantly reduce relapse “In high-stress families, schizophrenic patients given standard aftercare relapse 50-60% of the time in the first year out of hospital. Supportive family therapy can reduce this relapse rate to below 10 percent.... encourages family to convene a family meeting whenever an issue arises … to discuss … the exact nature of the problem, to consider alternative solutions, and to select the consensual best solution.” (Long, 1996)
