8 Avoiding Avoiding makes sense when: An issue is trivial, or when other more important issues are pressing. The damage of confronting a conflict outweighs the benefits of solving it. Need more time to gathering more information. To let people cool down-to reduce tensions to a productive level and to regain perspective and composure. Others are resolving the conflict more effectively. You see no chance of satisfying your concerns-e.g.,national policies, someone's personality structure, etc.

9 Accommodating Accommodating makes sense when: The issue is much more important to the other person than to you, and as a goodwill gesture to help maintain a cooperative relationship; Continued competition would only cause damage or you realize you will lose. Preserving harmony and avoiding disruption are important. Competing Competing makes sense when: Quick, decisive action is vital-e.g., emergencies. On important issues where unpopular courses of action need implementing-e.g., cost cutting, enforcing unpopular rules, discipline. To protect yourself against people who take advantage of noncompetitive behavior.

10 Compromising Compromising makes sense when: Goals are moderately important. Each side has equal power and both are strongly committed to mutually exclusive goals. To achieve temporary response to complex issues. To get a quick solution under time pressure. Collaborating Collaborating makes sense when: To find an integrative solution where everyone wins.
