30 Sample Six In Washing the Willow Tree Loon by Jacqueline Martin a loon runs into an oil spill and gets all messed up. First what happens is a barge carrying oil hits a bridge and oil goes everywhere. The birds swim through the oil and get oily. The book then follows one oily loon and what happens to it. The loon’s coat gets all matted and sticky from the oil. A person drives by and sees that the loon is dirty, but they drive on. Then a housepainter tries to catch the loon, but the loon gets away. Next, the painter picks up another loon, but it has died. The following morning a woman wades in the water and nets the soiled loon and wraps it in a towel. The loon is taken to a schoolhouse to get cleaned. A barber cleans the loon’s eyes and an animal doctor checks to see if it has broken bones. Later that night, a young man comes to the schoolhouse and gives the loon a bath. He rubs the feathers to clean off the oil. Finally, an old woman rinses the loon while two others hold the loon down. When done, the loon begins to preen itself. The loon is then carried to a large pool where it can swim and get ready to be released back into the wild. At the end of the story the loon is released by an artist and the loon swims away.
