1 Air Quality System (AQS) Presence on the Network Nick Mangus US EPA, Office of Air and Radiation
2
2 Topics for Today: Progress & Plans AQS Submission –Node Flow –Schemas –Automation Data Publishing plans Grants Communications
3
3 AQS Background The most important system at EPA, alphabetically Managed and operated in RTP, NC 1,000+ sites around the country 200+ parameters collected Data is used to determine non- attainment areas and by health researchers We get almost 2M data points per week from State, local, and tribal agencies (several hundred files) Highest volume through CDX
4
4 AQS Submission Flow History –Late 2004: Schema (v1) released –Early 2005: AQS accepts node flows and XML data –Saint Regis Mohawk first to do both! –Several have tested or done a few submissions –Only a few regularly submit via the node flow Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. -- Winston Churchill
5
5 AQS Status AQS accepts data via node! –Many formats Legacy flat file New flat file Schema v1.0 Schema v2.0 (almost!) New version of the schema (v2.0) will be released in a few weeks –New schema (v2.0) –New FCD –Sample instance document On demand from application, too –TPA template –Etc.
6
6 Schemas Version 1 developed with a pure information engineering approach –Node submission to feds –Minimize instance document size Version 2 developed for flexibility of exchange –ESAR compliant –Revamped structure Flat versus hierarchical –Better facilitates non-federal sharing –Will incorporate data for AirNow exchanges –Focus on “Air Quality” not just AQS Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm. -- Winston Churchill

7 Submission Automation – As Is We shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us. -- Winston Churchill

8 Submission Automation – To Be

9 Note the Key Words: Error Free No correlation with experience or volume, either What can AQS do to help you make your data better? What can you do with grant money? –Will it help others? ~ 6 months ~ 10,000 files Mean: 34% Agency # % of files with errors 100 0
10
10 Data Publishing No node publishing yet –Users can get XML data from AQS as you get any other data New system went live on 24 March: AQS Data Mart –Plan to have CDX web services available in July –Node: same protocol as AQDE project –Additional web services geared toward scientists –Web page for human interaction –Will eventually include AirNow data Will then work on publishing from AQS –Smaller audience Will publish / update FCDs Every day you may make progress…Yet there will stretch out before you an ever- lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. -- Winston Churchill
11
11 Grants – One Quick Word Is that working out okay for y’all? If you need AQS to do something to make your grant project work, let us know early and often IPT calls: –Every other Wednesday –April 26 is the next one –3:00 pm eastern –877 455 8688, code 779044

12 Summary AQS accepts node flows Schema v2.0 imminent Data Publishing flow soon Automation – we can help each other Communications –IPT –Nick Mangus mangus.nick@epa.gov 919-541-5549 It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read books of quotations. -- Winston Churchill
