2 Born on 30 th November 1874 at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire (UK) The son of Lord Randolph Churchill (politician) and the American heiress Jennie Jerome Educated at three independent schools: St George's School in Ascot, Berkshire, followed by Brunswick School in Hove, near Brighton and then at Harrow School on 17 th April 1888 Studied also at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst → army career Worked as a journalist during the Boer War → captured → famous escape 1900 - Conservative member of parliament for Oldham 1904 - joined the Liberal Party 1910 – became Home secretary 1911 – appointed First Lord of the Admiralty

3 1915 - left the war cabinet after failure at the battle of Gallipoli → joined the army on the Western front (until 1917) Returned to the government in 1917 as Minister of Munitions, then became Secretary for War and Air and Colonial Secretary 1924 – re-elected to Parliament → joined the Conservative Party again → 1924-1919 - served as Chancellor of the Exchequer (equivalent to Treasury Secretary) Unpopular after being against Indian self-rule and after supporting Edward VIII during the 'Abdication Crisis' His warnings about the rise of Nazi Germany were ignored After the beginning of the WW II became again First Lord of Admiralty 1940 – replaced Neville Chamberlain as Prime Minister Worked to build what he called a 'Grand Alliance' (with the Soviet Union and the United States)

4 1945 – Germany collapsed → 8 th May = Victory in Europe Day Defeat in 1945 elections → the Leader of the Opposition 1951-1955 – became Prime Minister again 1953 – received the Nobel Prize in literature (especially for his six - edition set The Second World War) Retired from the government in 1955 due to poor physical condition 24 th January 1965 – died in London → a state funeral service was held at St Paul‘s Cathedral 2002 – won BBC poll of the '100 Greatest Britons'
