CONCISENESS To get to the point as quickly as possible... Resist the temptation to add a paragraph or two Remember your audience! The reader may be annoyed by unnecessary verbal ramblings

GET TO THE POINT DELETE UNNECESSARY WORDS & PHRASES USE ACTIVE VOICE... USE CONCRETE SUBJECTS & ACTION VERBS DELETE ‘PADDING’ AVOID REDUNDANCIES COMBINE WHERE POSSIBLE

Will the reader care about what you are writing about? Is the reader properly informed? Is the reader PERSUADED... If you lose your reader, you lose all informative & persuasive effect!

Variety!

VARIETY! Sentence construction Words NO repetition of selected words! It becomes very annoying when reading the same word or phrases over and over again

TONE Can engage / put off reader immediately Avoid rigid & lifeless tone Write in your ‘authentic voice’ YOUR words! Avoid humor – maintain professionalism

PATHOS Your ability to connect with your audience on an emotional level NB in persuasive writing How can I influence the reader’s emotional response to my writing? o Writing style o Factual composition o Emotive words Maintain professionalism, refrain from becoming sentimental / patronising
