The Story of Halloween Halloween is one of the oldest holidays which people celebrate in many countries on the 31 st of October. Hundreds of years ago in Great Britain lived the Celts. The Celts worshipped nature and had many gods. The Celts celebrated New Year on November 1st because it was the end of the season of the sun and the beginning of the season of darkness and cold. On October 31st they met in the hilltop, made fires, sang and danced around the fires. They wanted to scare evil forces. The November 1st festival was called Samhain (pronounced “sow-en”) and lasted for three days. Many people were in costumes made from the skins and heads of their animals. This festival became the first Halloween.

Today Halloween is the best holiday for children. Children in England and America put on masks and fancy costumes in the evening on the 31 st of October, go to their neighbours’ houses and shout “trick-or-treat”! Most people give them a treat – candy or fruit. They decorate their houses and schools in traditional Halloween colour: orange and black. Today Halloween is the best holiday for children.
