1
Changes in curriculum in order to accommodate joint MSc studies Zoran Budimac
2
Reminder We reformed our studies in: 2002, 2005, and 2006 The next iteration is in 2007. Now (essentially since 2002), we have: 75% courses in informatics > 45% places to elect courses Elective seminars (almost completely freely designed every year) Courses freely elective from the whole faculty (geography, gastronomy, tourism, …)
3
Environment in which we created the last one The Bologna-compliant higher education law adopted in Autumn 2005. 2 years to adjust curricula and local documents are given Since then, no governmental bodies were formed, no subdocuments were adopted, no local (University, Faculty) legislative documents were adjusted to the new law
4
Environment-2 Nevertheless, our faculty decides To be a leader of the reforms Within the university that is already leader in the reforms in Serbia To join forces with other similar faculties to reach some common decisions We started To adjust Bachelor studies To create Master studies To create Doctoral studies To adjust local legislative to the new law To revise organization structure of the faculty, departments and chairs
5
Environment-3 Rules, principles, decisions, guidelines were changing on an almost daily basis during several months (November 2005 – March 2006) In that period we were adjusting on-the-fly - producing several versions of curricula for all three educational levels.
6
Final decisions Monolithic studies lasting for 5 years leading to master degree But student can leave studies after 3, 4 or 5 years obtaining corresponding degree: ???, bachelor, master. Why? In order to trick the government to support whole studies. Implicitly, we adopted 3+1+1 scheme
7
How we inserted joint master studies in SE into the adopted scheme If we would just added 3 semesters from joint master studies to the 8 semesters of bachelor studies → 5½ years Therefore we cleared the 8 th semester to make space for the 1 st semester of joint master studies We make diploma work optional
15
Joint Master Studies in Software Engineering
16
But, the idea failed Joint Master Studies in Software Engineering Other master studies
17
Problems In just several days we in fact implemented explicit 4+1 scheme With joint master studies left on both sides of the border … …which may be the problem for students enrolling this and the next year – they did not have the ‘proper’ eight semester Trying to solve the problem this year to condition getting the ‘joint’ diploma, only if the student pass extra four core courses (formally good, but politically bad) Trying to solve the problem next year by creating (recognizing) master studies in SE explicitly.
