Jack-o-lantern is short for “Jack of the Lantern” It comes from an Irish myth about a man named “Stingy Jack.” Stingy Jack was a drunkard, a liar, and someone who could never be trusted.

When Jack died, he couldn’t go to Heaven and the Devil told him he wasn’t welcome in Hell. The Devil gave Jack a burning ember...
