2 UNECE TIMBER COMMITTEE Sixtieth session, 24-27 September 2002 Highlights of Forest Products Annual Market Review 2001-2002 (1-5) Market downturn lasted from 2000 through 2001 in North America and Europe. Upturn during the first half of 2002. Prices turned upward in the first half of 2002. Profits weak in 2001. United States paper and paperboard demand and output contracted through 2001 and into the first quarter of 2002, extending a multi- year downturn from historical peaks in the second half of 1999.

3 UNECE TIMBER COMMITTEE Sixtieth session, 24-27 September 2002 Highlights of Forest Products Annual Market Review 2001-2002 (6-10) European and Canadian pulp and paper production receded also in 2001. Capacity rationalization continued in the United States. Russia’s pulp and paper sector continued to experience growth. “Other Europe” production of paper, paperboard and woodpulp increased. Capacity growth remains well below historical growth rates
