Slave revolt Revolutionaries in France During the French revolution try to take control over Haiti. Haitian slaves exploded in revolt, in 1791. Toussaint Liouverture. An intelligent and skillful leader who was a self educated former slave. Brilliant general and inspiring commander Struggles. The army of former slaves faced many enemies during that time. They took more lives than any other revolution Goals. Enslaved Haitians have been freed. Haiti was still a French colony due to forces controlling most of the island.

Geography & History Mosquitoes carried the yellow fever virus and transmitted it by biting the French troops. Historians estimate that of the 33,000 French troops sent to the Haiti 29,000 contracted yellow fever within a year. Some historians think that history would have been different if Haiti were not a tropical island where mosquito's thrived One said simply “ Mosquitoes liberated Haiti”.

Toussaint L’ouverture on slavery In the late 1700’s he led a successful revolt in Haiti to eliminate slavery. He feared that the French who still held Haiti as a colony would try to re- establish slavery. Famous quote: “ But if, to re- establish slavery in Haiti this was to be done, then I declare to you it would be to attempt the impossible; we have known how to face dangers to obtain out liberty, we should know how to brave death to maintain it”.

Independence Napoleon Bonaparte rose to power in France. In 1802 napoleon Bonaparte set a large army to re concur Haiti. Toussaint urged Haitians to take up arms to fight for full independence from France. Guerilla forces were aided by deadly ally, yellow fever In April 1802 the French agreed to a truce. French captured Toussaint and carried him in chains to France. Toussaint died ten months after the French captured him. 1804 Haitian leaders declared independence. Napoleon abandoned Haiti. In 1820, Haiti became a republic.
