2. What is a ‘social class’? A “social class” is a division (group) of society that are set apart due to social and economic status (how much money they make)  In the US, we have upper, middle, and lower class  The social classes in colonial America were a bit different  On your pyramid, write the description of each class in the box given for it

3. Native Americans Native Americans were the lowest on the colonial social class pyramid No one had any respect for Native Americans and they were continually killed and pushed off their lands and their homes People did not think twice about killing Native Americans

4. Slaves Slaves were one step above Native Americans Slaves were abused and mistreated, but owners would think twice about killing a slave that could make them money.

5. Indentured Servants Owners had even more reason to keep these people alive: they owed him money Also, most indentured servants were white, so people were less likely to kill them

6. Free (Black) Men There were some black men who were not slaves, they were called free black men They had some protection from the law, and they often owner their own businesses or worked for money (rather than as a slave)

7. (White) Women These women were protected by their fathers and their husbands They could not vote or own land

8. Land Owners These were the men who owned land In these days, land was a sign that you were wealthy- the more land you had the richer it seemed you were

9. (Lords) Proprietor This was the highest step on the pyramid These were the men who owned and ran the colonies They had almost absolute power
