2 Teaching Objectives Students will be able to : Get to know the early civil-rights in the US, esp. the Underground Railroad; Learn to use library resources and other resources for information; Grasp the use of direct speech; Master the key language points and grammatical structures in the text

4 Background Information—Slavery Black Americans were first brought as slaves to what was to become the U. S. in the 17th century. Slavery was strongest in the South, where large plantations grow cotton, tobacco, and other crops. Towards the end of the 18th century, a growing demand for cotton led to an increase in the demand for slaves.

5 Background Information—Slavery Slavery was less profitable in the North, however, and much of the opposition to slavery came from the northern states. The tension between the North and the South over the issue of slavery led to the Civil War in 1861.

6 Civil Rights Movement With the victory of the North, slavery was abolished. Discrimination, however, did not end. Black Americans were treated as second class citizens, especially in the South. Dissatisfaction with unfair treatment eventually led to the Civil Rights Movement.

7 Civil Rights Movement In 1963 a march to Washington was led by Martin Luther King, who gave a speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial “I Have a Dream”.

8 Civil Rights Movement The movement succeed in causing the introduction of government actions. 1) The Civil Rights Act of 1964: the law forced the southern states to allow black people to enter restaurants, hotels, etc, which had been reserved for white people only and to end the practice of having separate areas for black and white in public places. 2) The Voting Rights Act of 1965
