COMING OF THE CIVIL WAR

HISTORIANS PERSPECTIVE Historians belief system Cultural and political traditions were similar so therefore the North and South could have settled their differences. (Democracy, Free Enterprise, Social Equality) Some believed society was not similar everywhere (Differences between regions, racial groups, and social classes). UNAVOIDABLE Did not have to happen the way it did, but they do believe a major conflict would have had to occur.

SLAVERY: ALL CONFLICTS CONNECT TO THIS White Northerners believed: Violated rights of US constitution and Christian religion Freedom to choose own destiny and follow God’s laws. Southerners: Blacks and whites were not equal. They were prejudice What does it mean to be prejudice? Does prejudice exist today? If it does, give me an example. Prejudice- Unreasonable or unfavorable opinion of another group North- Slavery is an evil that can not be tolerated

UNCLE TOM’S CABIN Have you ever watched, read, or have been told a story that has made a substantial impact in your life? How? By Harriet Beecher Stowe (Instant best seller and sold millions of copies) Tells story of Eliza Harris, her escape with her child, her help with the Underground railroad, and Uncle Tom who helps her and is later killed. Also discusses importance of: 1.Women and ideal of family a)Uncle Tom’s family (Tragic end) b)Cruel Slave holder of Simon Legree c)North: Fear of Legree 2.Corrupt those outside the system 3.Powerful story that taught the North to do what was right a)Led to some helping slaves escape

SLAVERY IMPACT How do we think the North/South reacted to Uncle Tom’s Cabin? North: Convinced slavery would be the ruin of the United States Worried it would become a land of Simon Legrees South: Insulting lies (Some were Legrees but many were happy families). Protested, and spoke out about evils of the North (Industrial society is worse) 1.No personal responsibility for their workers (No connection) 2.Employees could be replaced so they did not care about them. 3.Did not care if employees were under paid. Do we think a poor worker or a slave may have had the better life? South: Founding Fathers owned slaves Houses possessed order, grace, and liberty

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN NORTH/SOUTH Look on your chart, what are some of the differences you see growing? 1.North: More Urban and Industrialized 2.North: Twice the population 3.Railroad (Canals were outdated) 4.Telegraph (Dots and dashes) More advances equals more money NOT PERSONAL, ITS BUSINESS
