Types of Reactions and Predicting Products SNC2D
2
Types of Reactions Reactions can be divided into 4 main types: Synthesis Synthesis Decomposition Decomposition Single Displacement/Replacement Single Displacement/Replacement Double Displacement/Replacement Double Displacement/Replacement
3
Synthesis Synthesis: 2 or more reactants combine to form 1 product
4
Synthesis
5
Synthesis e.g.Mg + O 2 -> MgO
6
Synthesis Synthesis: 2 or more reactants combine to form 1 product e.g. 2Mg + O 2 -> 2 MgO
7
Synthesis Synthesis: 2 or more reactants combine to form 1 product e.g. 2Mg + O 2 2 MgO S + Zn ZnS
8
Decomposition Decomposition: 1 reactant breaks down into 2 or more products
9
Decomposition e.g. H 2 O H 2 + O 2
10
Decomposition Decomposition: 1 reactant breaks down into 2 or more products e.g. 2 H 2 O 2 H 2 + O 2
11
Decomposition Decomposition: 1 reactant breaks down into 2 or more products e.g. 2 H 2 O 2 H 2 + O 2 KClO 3 KCl + O 2 KClO 3 KCl + O 2
12
Decomposition Decomposition: 1 reactant breaks down into 2 or more products e.g. 2 H 2 O 2 H 2 + O 2 2 KClO 3 2 KCl + 3 O 2 2 KClO 3 2 KCl + 3 O 2
13
Single Displacement Single Displacement: a single element replaces another in a compound
14
Single Displacement Single Displacement: a single element replaces another in a compound e.g. MgBr 2 + Cl 2 MgCl 2 + Br 2 Negative ions replace negative ions!
15
Single Displacement Single Displacement: a single element replaces another in a compound e.g. Fe + CuSO 4
16
Single Displacement Single Displacement: a single element replaces another in a compound e.g. Fe + CuSO 4 Cu + FeSO 4 And positive ions replace positive ions!
17
Double Displacement Double Displacement: parts of two compounds switch places
18
Double Displacement Double Displacement: parts of two compounds switch places e.g. NaOH + FeCl 3
19
Double Displacement Double Displacement: parts of two compounds switch places e.g. NaOH + FeCl 3 Fe(OH) 3 + NaCl
20
Double Displacement Double Displacement: parts of two compounds switch places e.g. 3 NaOH + FeCl 3 Fe(OH) 3 + 3 NaCl
21
Double Displacement Double Displacement: parts of two compounds switch places e.g. 3 NaOH + FeCl 3 Fe(OH) 3 + 3 NaCl Remember that positive ions pair with negative ions.
22
Combustion And remember that there also exist combustion reactions: e.g. the combustion of hydrocarbons like methane CH 4 + O 2 CO 2 + H 2 O
