Webinar Customization of the GBIF Integrated Publishing Toolkit Kyle Braak 1 iDigBio Adobe Connect Platform http://idigbio.adobeconnect.com/ipt/http://idigbio.adobeconnect.com/ipt/ 7 January 2015, 12:00-02:00 pm EST 1 GBIF Secretariat

2 Structure of the webinar 1.Introduction 2.Requirements to install the GBIF IPT 3.Installation and setup 4.Customization 5.How to get help 6.General discussion 7.Wrap-up and evaluation

3 IPT Customizations User interface Customize the IPT’s look and feel in order to integrate the IPT into your existing website, or just to give it a facelift. Language Translate the interface into another language or dialect making it easier to use Cores Add a new core (extension) to the IPT in order to publish more than just taxon and occurrence core datasets – Warning: intended for advanced IPT users only

4 Interface Customization The IPT has been designed to allow for easy customization of its user interface Interface customization comes with this caveat: Customizations will likely have to be adapted and/or restored whenever the IPT is upgraded to a newer version Simple customizations can be achieved with the use of CSS overrides – Guide: https://code.google.com/p/gbif- providertoolkit/wiki/IPT2Customizationhttps://code.google.com/p/gbif- providertoolkit/wiki/IPT2Customization More thorough customizations can be facilitated by the use of scripting – Canadensys’ guide: http://www.canadensys.net/2011/customizing-the-ipthttp://www.canadensys.net/2011/customizing-the-ipt

5 Interface Customization Example 1/2 SIB Colombia IPT: http://ipt.sibcolombia.net/sib/ http://ipt.sibcolombia.net/sib/ General customization guide available here: https://code.google.com/p/gbif- providertoolkit/wiki/IPT2Customization

6 Interface Customization Example 2/2 Canadensys IPT: http://data.canadensys.net/ipt/ http://data.canadensys.net/ipt/ Customization guide available here: http://www.canadensys.net/2011/customizing-the-ipt

7 Language Customization The IPT has been designed to allow for easy internationalization of its user interface The IPT has already been translated into 6 languages: English, French, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, Portuguese, and Japanese Internationalization comes with the caveat: Translations have to be updated for each new IPT release An online tool called Crowdin makes translation fun and easy, with 9 volunteer translators from around the world using it so far – To volunteer just sign in to Crowdin and request access to the project: https://crowdin.com/project/gbif-ipt https://crowdin.com/project/gbif-ipt

8 Language Customization Tool: Crowdin To volunteer just sign in to Crowdin and request access to the project: https://crowdin.com/project/gbif-ipthttps://crowdin.com/project/gbif-ipt

9 Core Customization The IPT has been designed to allow for easy customization of the types of datasets it publishes Several communities have already started prototyping new cores (extensions) including EUBON prototyping an Event core, and GGBN prototyping the Material Sample core Core customization comes with the caveats: 1) They require advanced configuration of the IPT 2) The published format must still be Darwin Core Archive 3) GBIF can only index occurrence and taxon core datasets right now (January 2015)

10 Core Customization Example 1/1 EUBON IPT: http://eubon-ipt.gbif.org/about.dohttp://eubon-ipt.gbif.org/about.do Core customization guide available here: https://code.google.com/p/gbif-providertoolkit/wiki/IPT2Core
