2 The Laptop Privilege  Teacher/student digital access pushes students to forefront in college preparation  Engaged students are learning more, faster  One-to-One Laptop culture is tied to ZHS’s culture  But… this is all a privilege.

3 Laptop Use is a Privilege ZCSD Property  Care  Personal use v. school use  What can I do?  What can’t I do?  Being smart at home  Talk about responsibility  Set rules  Monitor Financial liability  Lost/stolen laptops Student ResponsibilitiesParent Responsibilities

4 Safety on the Internet  Be informed!  Check the physical condition at least 3 times/wk.  Check the web history.  Recognize illegally downloaded material.  Look for hidden files.

5 Safety on the Internet  Communicate!  Surf the Internet together.  Remember Internet is mobile. Check cell phones, gaming devices as well as laptops.  Keep computer in a shared space.

6 What we see in laptop damages  Family members/friends changing settings  Using online software to avoid blocked sites  Broken screens  Broken hinges  Missing keys

7 What we see in laptop damages  Water damage  Food Damage  Dirt, grime and insects  Laptop left unattended

8 Acceptable Use Violations  Accessing unacceptable sites  Changing settings  Deleting history  Illegal downloads: music, videos, games  Cyber-bullying and sexting  Using it as a personal laptop

9 ZCSD Tracking and Monitoring  ZCSD monitors the use of laptops  Theft Recovery  Data management (including music & videos)  Software Installations

10 ZCSD Tracking and Monitoring  ZCSD reserves the right to inspect the laptops:  Physical damage  Check internet history, software installations, and etc.

11 Disciplinary Actions  What happens if a student uses the laptop inappropriately?

12 Laptop Protection: It’s ALL in the Bag!  A good laptop bag is essential to the protection of the computer.  No books in the bags!

13 To get a laptop…  Pay the $35 fee.  Sign and submit required forms (2)  Attend this orientation session  Pledge to monitor your child’s use and care of the laptop.

14  Students may bring laptops to back to school on November 10 th.  Do not bring power cords on campus. Do not bring laptops on campus before this time.

15 Next Steps:  Report to the band room with your signed papers.  Pay $35.  Report back to the auditorium.  Log on the computer.  (If you do not login on campus the first time the laptop will not work away from the school network.)

16 Before getting in line  Be sure you have both forms signed and completed.  Make sure student name and your telephone number are written in the memo line of the check.
