Elliott Taylor Nikita Joshi

 What is it? ◦ A group of people with a common goal work together to come to a “consensus” about an unresolved issue ◦ Unanimous agreement or majority rule

Advantages  Input from more than one individual can opens up multiple possible courses of action  An individual often cannot process as much information as a group  Group members can bring unique knowledge and skills to the decision making process

Disadvantages  Frequently takes longer than for an individual to make a decision  Discussions can get heated when multiple experts are involved  Pressure to agree can outweigh the importance of finding the “best solution”

 Group members try to minimize conflict to reach a consensus without critically testing and analyzing ideas during group decision making.  "a way of deliberating that group members use when their desire for unanimity overrides their motivation to assess all available plans of action.” – Irving Janis, 1972
