2 What do these images have in common? They are all used to influence you to do something. They are all examples of propaganda!

3 Propaganda WHAT? A message used to persuade you to believe something or do something WHO? Corporations Government Individuals HOW? There are 10 propaganda techniques we will learn WHERE? Commercials Packaging Speeches Stores Billboards Internet Newspapers Everywhere! WHY? To persuade you to buy something, think something, or do something.

4 The 1 st type of Propaganda is… Persuading people to do something by letting them know others are doing it. All the cool kids are doing it Everybody has one!

5 Bandwagon works because it makes you think “everyone is doing it” and you should too. Why is this sign considered BANDWAGON?

7 The 2 nd type of Propaganda is… Using words and images of a customer, famous person, or an expert to persuade.

8 Testimonials work because you feel like you can trust the words of an expert or someone famous.

10 The 3 rd type of Propaganda is… Using authority instead of evidence

11 False authority works because we trust people in authority and think they would tell us the truth about everything.

12 The 4th type of Propaganda is… Using images to bring up strong feelings or emotions in order to persuade.

13 Transfer works because you transfer the feelings you associate with a picture to feelings about a person or product. What emotion is being transferred in this ad?

15 The 5 th type of Propaganda is… Represent something as being larger, greater, better, or worse than it really is.

16 Exaggeration works because it makes things interesting and seem better than they actually are.

19 Contradictions confuse people, because it makes one of the things said true and one false.

20 The 7 th type of Propaganda is… Misrepresents the goods or services to make it seem better.

21 Misleading Statements make a product or service seem better than it is so the customer is more likely to buy it.

22 The 8 th type of Propaganda is… Plays on our deep-seated fears and warns the audience that disaster will strike if we do not follow the instructions.

23 Fear works because we want to keep ourselves and our family safe.

27 Faulty reasoning is improper reasoning. It has some kind of mistake in the logic.

28 Introducing new techniques! Distracts the audience by presenting an issue not related to the topic

29 Red Herrings change the subject. They distract you from what you are supposed to be focusing on.
