How to conduct the interview  Have different types of questions, open ended and closed questions.  Descriptive will allow them to first get to know the interviewee.  Compare life events before and after

Different types of questions  Descriptive  Used to obtain large amount of information about event or a place  E.g “Can you describe your school common room for me?”

Different types of questions  Structural  Try to understand the meaning of concepts  Contrast  Compare events and ideas from one another.  E.g difference between homework and schoolwork

What to consider BEFORE, DURING, AFTER?  Have them know that it might be recorded  Let them know that whatever they say is going to be recorded and they have the right to withdraw anytime  Have a therapist ready in case of emotional breakdown of sensitive topics  Researcher should make participants feel comfortable telling them everything, by being nice, sitting at an angle, not facing them directly. Get a drink for the participant. Prepare these things before the interview.  Check that the Recording device is recording

What to consider BEFORE, DURING, AFTER?  The gender, size, age and ethnicity should be matched when conducting the interview especially during sensitive topics e.g. sexual assault. Supported by Rosenthal (1966)  Confidentially needs to be assured when talking about sensitive topics because some of the information they give, interviewers feel a responsibility to pass on to authorities.

What to consider BEFORE, DURING, AFTER?  Maybe could record the interview  Record voice  Don’t take notes because it may distract the participant  If notes are taken, have the parcitipant transcribe it later on  Maintain eye contact

What to consider BEFORE, DURING, AFTER?  Participants are allowed to view the transcribed material so they can change anything which they feel is wrong  Two types of transcription should be allowed, vertim or postmodern techniques.  Make sure all questions are covered.

What to consider BEFORE, DURING, AFTER?  Debrief the participants (include what is to be done with the recorded information, who is to handle it etc)  Important to talk to participants during analysis process to confirm what they said.
