How to conduct the interview Have different types of questions, open ended and closed questions. Descriptive will allow them to first get to know the interviewee. Compare life events before and after

Different types of questions Descriptive Used to obtain large amount of information about event or a place E.g “Can you describe your school common room for me?”

Different types of questions Structural Try to understand the meaning of concepts Contrast Compare events and ideas from one another. E.g difference between homework and schoolwork

What to consider BEFORE, DURING, AFTER? Have them know that it might be recorded Let them know that whatever they say is going to be recorded and they have the right to withdraw anytime Have a therapist ready in case of emotional breakdown of sensitive topics Researcher should make participants feel comfortable telling them everything, by being nice, sitting at an angle, not facing them directly. Get a drink for the participant. Prepare these things before the interview. Check that the Recording device is recording

What to consider BEFORE, DURING, AFTER? The gender, size, age and ethnicity should be matched when conducting the interview especially during sensitive topics e.g. sexual assault. Supported by Rosenthal (1966) Confidentially needs to be assured when talking about sensitive topics because some of the information they give, interviewers feel a responsibility to pass on to authorities.

What to consider BEFORE, DURING, AFTER? Maybe could record the interview Record voice Don’t take notes because it may distract the participant If notes are taken, have the parcitipant transcribe it later on Maintain eye contact

What to consider BEFORE, DURING, AFTER? Participants are allowed to view the transcribed material so they can change anything which they feel is wrong Two types of transcription should be allowed, vertim or postmodern techniques. Make sure all questions are covered.

What to consider BEFORE, DURING, AFTER? Debrief the participants (include what is to be done with the recorded information, who is to handle it etc) Important to talk to participants during analysis process to confirm what they said.
