Chapter 11 Pg. 184-201 in Textbook

 A society is a group of people in a particular geographic area who share certain laws and rules, and who agree to relate to each other in certain ways.  Culture: a set of ideas and behaviours handed down from one generation to the next and shared among a group of people.  Ex. If you moved to France, you would live in French society, and would have to conform to French laws. But, you would still behave for the most part, like a Canadian.

 Acculturation:  Assimilation:  Multicultural societies:  Social inequality:  Multiculturalism:

 The process of taking on the cultural beliefs, attitudes, ways of talking and behaviour of another culture.

 Refers to the process by which a group is absorbed into the culture around it.

 Societies with policies that encourage members to retain their cultural traditions are called multicultural societies.  Ex. Canada and Switzerland have official policies that advocate or support keeping cultural traditions from all citizens.

 New ideas and art forms are among some benefits of multicultural societies. Being exposed to different cultures can enrich the lives of individual and benefit the society as a whole.  A combination of different cultures living together in society.

 Unequal treatment of groups  Some critics suggest that multiculturalism is a smokescreen or tern used to distract from social inequality  Some say society is not democratics and there is unequal distribution of power and resources.  Is access to power and opportunities influenced by factors such as race, gender and class?

 the mix of ethnic groups, languages and cultures that co-exist within society. [1][2] The idea of a cultural mosaic is intended to champion an ideal of multiculturalism, differently from other systems like the melting pot, which is often used to describe the United States' ideal of assimilation.ethnic groupslanguages cultures [1][2]multiculturalismmelting potassimilation
